Maryhill High School attending Mushroom entrepreneurship lectures at MTRC during the 2017 Study Tour.

During their study tour, Students from Maryhill High School attend the Mushroom entrepreneurship lectures at MTRC annually as a buildup on the already performing mushroom project being run at the same School in Mbarara. MTRC Skilling Spawn Producers from KAWANDA.

MTRC conducts training sessions all through the mushroom value chain. Selected Individuals and groups sponsored by Kawanda Agricultural Centre have benefitted from the Spawn Production lectures at MTRC. MTRC produces spawn for multiple strains under the oyster Family and other species other than Oyster mushrooms. MTRC has a strong team of lab attendants and specialized staff working 6 days a week on maintaining the quality and standards of mushroom spawn given to our farmers.      

ASSESSMENT OF THE SKILLED YOUTH BY THE DIRECTORATE OF INDUSTRIAL TRAINING!

The youth that are skilled in mushroom value chain, entrepreneurship and agribusiness management are evaluated and assessed by the Ministry of Education And Sports under the Directorate of Industrial Training. The latest practical examinations were conducted at the Centre for the skilled youth! This practical exam is one of the requirements for Certification by the ministry. Youth Farmers skilled at MTRC participate at the Agriculture Career expo at the Makerere University.

MTRC was represented by the youth farmers from the Skilling program at MTRC in the exhibition at Makerere University March 2017. Over 600 people visited our stall and the awareness created an impact in the students at the university in the college of Agriculture. These learnt alot in mushroom value chain during the exhibition and others signed up for training due after their semester course at the university. New developments in our Spawn strains and lab procedures in collboration with FAO.

MTRC in collaboration with FAO has successfully introduce new oyster mushroom strains at the Centre. The spawn conservation bank of new oyster strains at MTRC now contains new variety of Chinese originated strains. We believe a variety of strains works to the benefit of our farmers. The trainees at MTRC receive a range of practical skills and competences relevant in the labor market, among these is the construction of solar driers which are widely demanded and used by farmers all over Uganda to preserve agricultural products in particular fruits and vegetables like, mushrooms, onions, carrots, cabbages, tomatoes, ginger, cassava, among many others. THE TRAINEES UNDERGO PRACTICLE TRAINING SESSIONS IN AGRIBUSINESS.

During the practical sessions students get hands on applied experience by initiating their own (individual and group) gardens which is done right from the first stages of substrate preparation. The students gardens are supervised and nurtured till the mushrooms are ready for fruiting and harvest is done. This exposure avails each individual with a variety of capabilities that a typical commercial mushroom farmer must expect and they undergo practical drills of solving the challenges encountered.

MTRC JOINS PARTNERSHIP WITH AVSI/SKY FOR SKILLING YOUTH.

MTRC has undertaken a new program in partnership with AVSI & (SKY), mainly to skill youth for employment in Agribusiness. Relevant Practical education remains the solution to unlocking the potential and innovativeness of youth to be productive, particularly those involved in the informal sector in Uganda. Building private participation in skills training is the approach we are using to enhance sustainable creation of employment among youths in the agribusiness sector.
